Albion Powerchair finish as runners up in Optegra Premiership

Albion Powerchair were confirmed as runners up in the Optegra Premiership last weekend following ties against Aspire, Leeds Chariots, Teesside and Nottinghamshire.

The Baggies endured a weekend of mixed results at the Lee Westwood Sports Centre in Nottingham, beating Leeds and Nottinghamshire, but losing to title challengers Aspire and Teesside.

Dylan Kelsall (3) and Brad Bates (4) were amongst the scoring as Albion finished second, with the former securing his spot as the Baggies’ league top scorer for 2024/25.

The team will take to Club World Cup action later this month, before jumping almost immediately into an all-important FA Disability Cup showdown - where they face league rivals Teesside (June 29).

The final league weekend began with defeat to Teesside, who scored two second-half goals through Edward Common, leaving the Northerners level on points with leaders Albion.

The setback didn’t last for long, though, as the Baggies bounced back with an emphatic 0-6 triumph over hosts Nottinghamshire. Bates was on top form with a first-half hat-trick, all of which were trademark back post finishes.

Bates notched just seconds into the second half, before Matt Gilbert set up Chris Gordon with a well-worked set piece routine for five - Ollie Rock ended the rout as he slid into the bottom corner from range.

Sunday began much the same as Saturday ended, as Albion secured what would be their final three points of the campaign. Leeds were the recipients of the Baggies’ latest rout and fell behind within four minutes thanks to Kelsall’s shot from distance.

Kelsall bundled over the line for the second, before an own goal from Teeside defender Daniel Rigby wrapped up the win.

Aspire handed Albion their second defeat of the weekend, where they needed to win and hope Teesside dropped points to secure the league title.

It wasn’t to be, but the Baggies will go again at the end of the month in the Club World Cup, before heading to St George’s Park for the FA Disability Cup final, which will be shown live on TNT Sports.
