Derby County beat Albion via a penalty shootout in the Carabao Cup first-round on Tuesday night.

Aune Heggebø’s goal was cancelled out when the visitors netted during second-half stoppage time, sending the game to spot-kicks.

And the Rams won 3-2, advancing through. Next up for Ryan Mason’s men is a trip to Wrexham this Saturday (ko 12.30pm).

There were six changes to the line-up from last weekend’s league win - with Academy graduate Alex Williams making his debut and summer signing George Campbell grabbing a maiden start.

Albion created three early chances, however Ousmane Diakite’s long-range header was held, Isaac Price saw an effort saved, and Williams nodded into the side-netting.

Despite a lull around the drinks break, Ryan Mason’s side finished the first-half strongly. Price went closest to breaking the deadlock, yet he could only shoot narrowly over, leaving the game goalless at the break.

The hosts continued carving out opportunities following the interval. Price, once again, had an attempt stopped - as did Callum Styles.

The deserved opener finally arrived on 67-minutes, though, via Heggebø. The Norwegian converted well after Price knocked-down Styles’ crossfield pass inside the area.

Substitute Lennon Wheeldon almost netted an immediate equaliser, heading narrowly wide, but otherwise Albion continued searching for another as Jed Wallace and Styles both fired off-target.

Derby eventually put some late pressure on and scored in the 96th minute thanks to Joe Ward's free-kick.

And they then won the penalty shootout 3-2, securing their second round spot and sending Albion out.
